Let’s Talk Creativity

Creativity is the lifeblood of every story, character, and world an author brings to life. It’s the spark that transforms a simple idea into an entire narrative, turning a blank page into an immersive adventure. Yet, even for the most passionate writers, creativity can sometimes feel fleeting, slipping away just when we need it most. So, how do we reignite that spark? Here are a few techniques that help me nurture my creative flame when it begins to flicker.

  1. Do Nothing

I know this might sound counterproductive, but sometimes, the best way to fuel creativity is to simply step away from it. When I find myself staring at my computer screen, mentally wrung dry while trying to force character development or plot points, I know it’s time for a break. Straining over every detail can burn out your creative energy, and I’ve learned that stepping away to do absolutely nothing can be surprisingly effective.

By “nothing,” I mean I allow myself to disconnect entirely from writing. I give myself permission not to think about my story for a while. This break might last a few hours, a day, or even a week. But once my brain has had a chance to reset, I often find myself flooded with new ideas, my creative reservoir refreshed and ready. When that creative floodgate opens, I’m able to pour my heart and soul back into the work with renewed enthusiasm.

  1. Ask a Friend

As authors, we often feel the need to protect our work, shielding it from the world until it’s polished and published. I’m guilty of this myself—only my eyes see my manuscript during the early stages. However, when I hit a creative wall, I’ve found that opening up and seeking input from friends or family can work wonders.

I’ll share a brief overview of where my book currently stands and what I envision for the story’s future, then ask for their thoughts. An outsider’s perspective can add a depth and fresh creativity that I might not have seen on my own. Sometimes, their ideas spark something within me, sending me back to the keyboard with a new angle or direction to explore.

  1. Read a Book

Yes, writers love to read too—no surprises there, right? I make it a habit to read every day, but when I’m experiencing writer’s block, I turn to books with renewed focus. There’s something about getting lost in someone else’s world that recharges my own creativity. Reading is not only great for mental stimulation but also for inspiring new ideas, phrases, and narrative techniques.

Sometimes, I’ll come across a passage or an idea in a book that sparks an entirely new concept for my own work. Before I know it, I’m itching to get back to my story, unable to write fast enough to keep up with the rush of new ideas. Reading is a powerful tool for writers—it opens your mind to fresh possibilities.

Final Thoughts

These are just a few strategies that have worked for me when creativity feels elusive. There are countless ways to reignite that creative spark, but what matters most is finding what works for you. Always remember to follow your passion, never give up on yourself, and trust your instincts. You are talented, and wherever you are in your creative journey, you should be proud of what you’ve accomplished.

Keep going, and keep creating!
